Since 1974, when the first abortion facility opened in Auckland, New Zealand has seen more than 500,000 abortions take place.
Official statistics are sketchy prior to the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Act of 1977. However, the incidence of reported abortions increased incrementally over time until reaching a peak in 2003 of 18,511. The numbers continued to drop for a few years, then rose again in 2007 to 18,382. Since 2008, reported abortions in New Zealand have declined significantly and in 2016 Statistics New Zealand reports that there were 12,823 surgical and medical abortions.
